Order ahead

Baked here, every morning

Bread worth walking for, from 7am

A small bakery on Saddler Street. Sourdough proved overnight, pastries laminated by hand, and cakes made to order. When it is gone, it is gone — so most people order ahead.

Today's counter

What is actually out today. Update this list each morning — a bakery page that still lists yesterday's bread is worse than no list at all. Every price is an example.

Ordering and collection

The part people phone to ask. Answer it here and the phone rings less.

Order by 4pm the day before

Anything on the counter can be put by for you. After 4pm we have already worked out the morning's bake.

Collection from 7am

Named bags on the end of the counter. No queue, no payment in advance — pay when you collect.

Cakes need three days

Longer in December and around exam season. Tell us the date you need it and we will say yes or no straight away.

Wholesale and events

We supply four cafés locally. If you want bread daily or pastries for an event, call and ask for Rosa.

Two of us and one oven

Rosa bakes, Will runs the counter, and between them that is the whole business. We make what we can make properly, which is why the list above is short and why it sells out.

The shop is on Saddler Street between the hardware shop and the launderette. Two steps up at the door, and we will happily bring an order out to you if that is easier.

When we are open

Bread is usually out by 7:15. Pastries come out again around 10. Saturday afternoons are thin by about one o'clock.

What people say

Use real reviews, word for word, or remove this section.

“The sourdough is the best for thirty miles and I have looked.”

Jo H.

“Ordered a birthday cake with four days' notice, described roughly what I wanted, and it was better than the description.”

Tomas L.

“Worth getting there early. By ten on a Saturday the good stuff has gone.”

Marianne P.

Questions we get asked

Do you have gluten-free bread?

We do not. We mill and handle wheat flour in one small room, so we cannot honestly promise anything is free from it. We would rather say no than risk making somebody ill.

What about allergens generally?

Ask us and we will tell you exactly what is in anything on the counter. Nuts, dairy and egg are all used daily in the same space. Replace this answer with whatever your local rules require.

Can I pay in advance?

No need. Orders are paid for on collection, card or cash.

Do you deliver?

Not to houses. We do deliver wholesale orders to cafés and offices within the town before 8am.

What happens to what does not sell?

It goes half price in the last hour, and anything left after that goes to the community kitchen on Weir Street.

Order for collection

By 4pm for next-day bread and pastries. Three days for a cake.

We will text you back to confirm. Pay when you collect.
