Country sourdough
Proved for eighteen hours. Thick crust, open crumb, keeps three days in a paper bag.
Baked here, every morning
A small bakery on Saddler Street. Sourdough proved overnight, pastries laminated by hand, and cakes made to order. When it is gone, it is gone — so most people order ahead.
What is actually out today. Update this list each morning — a bakery page that still lists yesterday's bread is worse than no list at all. Every price is an example.

Laminated here over two days. Out of the oven at 7:15 and again at 10.
Cardamom in the dough. Best warm, which means before about half nine.
Soft crust, sliced free if you ask. The one the children will actually eat.
Made to order, three days' notice. Tell us the occasion and roughly how many people.
Sausage rolls, cheese and onion pasties, and a vegetable one that changes weekly.
The part people phone to ask. Answer it here and the phone rings less.
Anything on the counter can be put by for you. After 4pm we have already worked out the morning's bake.
Named bags on the end of the counter. No queue, no payment in advance — pay when you collect.
Longer in December and around exam season. Tell us the date you need it and we will say yes or no straight away.
We supply four cafés locally. If you want bread daily or pastries for an event, call and ask for Rosa.
Rosa bakes, Will runs the counter, and between them that is the whole business. We make what we can make properly, which is why the list above is short and why it sells out.
The shop is on Saddler Street between the hardware shop and the launderette. Two steps up at the door, and we will happily bring an order out to you if that is easier.

“The sourdough is the best for thirty miles and I have looked.”
Jo H.“Ordered a birthday cake with four days' notice, described roughly what I wanted, and it was better than the description.”
Tomas L.“Worth getting there early. By ten on a Saturday the good stuff has gone.”
Marianne P.We do not. We mill and handle wheat flour in one small room, so we cannot honestly promise anything is free from it. We would rather say no than risk making somebody ill.
Ask us and we will tell you exactly what is in anything on the counter. Nuts, dairy and egg are all used daily in the same space. Replace this answer with whatever your local rules require.
No need. Orders are paid for on collection, card or cash.
Not to houses. We do deliver wholesale orders to cafés and offices within the town before 8am.
It goes half price in the last hour, and anything left after that goes to the community kitchen on Weir Street.
By 4pm for next-day bread and pastries. Three days for a cake.
